NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Iona College women’s basketball dropped its home-finale to Marist on Tuesday evening, 55-45. The Red Foxes made just one field goal in the fourth quarter but converted on 13-of-18 from the free throw line to seal the decision at the Hynes Center.
Iona and Marist combined to shoot 11-for-57 (19.2%) in the second half. Red-shirt sophomore Alana Gilmer led all scorers with 23 points for the Red Foxes. She shot 9-for-13 from the floor, and the rest of her teammates combined to shoot 6-for-33 (18.2%).
Rookie Jayden Eggleston had her second double-double effort of the season, once again against Marist, with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. She fouled out of the game after 36 minutes during which she also passed two assists and collected two steals. Junior Alexis Lewis scored a team-high 16 points on 7-for-18 shooting. She fell one rebound shy of a double-double.
The Gaels shot 29.0% from the floor and 13.6% from beyond the arc. Lewis hit two of Iona’s three trifectas. Rookie Toyosi Abiola had only three points on one long-range make.
Iona held the Red Foxes to an opponent-low one made three-pointer and a 7.1% long range percentage. They entered the game with the third ranked three-point shooting percentage in the conference.
Marist’s leading scorer Rebekah Hand was held in check. The sophomore shot 2-for-13 from the floor, but still netted 14 points with 10 made free throws. Junior Treyanna Clay and sophomore Amelia Motz each had a team-high three assists.
The Maroon & Gold out-rebounded the Red Foxes by three and had a 16-9 edge in offensive rebounds. Iona mustered just 12 second chance points. Marist, coming off a double-overtime loss against Quinnipiac, managed with just four bench points.
The regular season finale for Iona is on Sunday, Feb. 25 at Fairfield at 2 PM. The Gaels will be playing on the opening day of the 2018 MAAC Basketball Championships in Albany, NY.
