NEW ROCHELLE, NY —
The following is a message from New Rochelle Board of Education President Rachel Relkin, adapted from comments she made at the opening of last night’s Board meeting:
As a board we would like to thank the community for your commitment and engagement in the budget process. We heard residents from all corners of the City speak passionately and engage in rich dialogue on issues of fiscal health, equity and excellence, student needs, and the tax burden. Tonight, we acknowledge that the vote yesterday was a resounding rejection of the Board’s budget. To that end, we would like to affirm our collective commitment to creating a revised budget together. We will work collaboratively to ensure that a new budget is developed that strikes the right balance for our community. At our meeting scheduled for next Tuesday, May 22, the Superintendent will present a new budget for consideration, with a Board vote on the plan following a week later on May 29. A public hearing will then be held on June 5. The two meetings and the hearing will be held in the New Rochelle High School library. The public will vote on the new proposition on June 19.
We are committed to serving the entire community, and we are proud to serve as your Board of Education.
Sincerely,
Rachel Relkin
President
New Rochelle Board of Education
