NEW ROCHELLE, NY — In addition to a wide variety of concerts and other cultural programs conducted at the New Rochelle Public Library, adults can take advantage of a number of free programs held throughout the school year.
Each month the library offers free Computer Classes, including instruction in basics, (in English and in Spanish), demonstrations of 3-D Printing, four-week intensive courses in such areas as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel, overviews of social media platforms, and guidance in scanning/downloading images. Lunchtime Yoga for Adults is held on Mondays, beginning September 10, from 12:15 – 12:45 pm, and Wednesdays, 1:15 – 2:00 pm, except on holidays and during school vacation weeks. Guided by yoga instructor Nora LeMorin, these mid-day sessions designed to help relax and strengthen involve traditional and adapted poses that are practiced either standing or seated in chairs – no mats needed. The free drop-in program is made possible by the Friends of the New Rochelle Public Library and donations are gratefully accepted.
Brown Bag Book Discussions are held every three weeks, when a dozen or so readers get together with librarians to talk about assigned books in the library’s second floor meeting room.. These are held on Wednesdays from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm. The schedule for this fall is as follows: September 12: Beloved, by Toni Morrison; October 3: Manhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln’s Killer, by James Swanson; and October 24: The Sheltering Sky, by Paul Bowles Copies of the books are available to be checked-out at the Registration Desk.
“Cook by the Book” Book Club meets on one Saturday each month, from 12:00 noon to 1:30 pm, in the library’s meeting room. The fall sessions will be held on September 8, October 6, November 3, and December 8. Participants share thematic recipes (and enjoy samples) from the library’s terrific collection of cookbooks or from favorite food blogs. Needlework Workshops are led by volunteers Rosalie Hollingsworth and Minnie Speciale, who help participants of all ages and abilities with their needlework. On a drop-in basis, individuals can receive free guidance with knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, quilting, and other project on Saturdays, September 8 and September 15, and on October 6 and October 20, from 10:30 am – 12 noon, in the first floor Community Gallery.
Sing Your Heart Out! Workshops for singers ages 55 & older resume this fall on Saturdays, October 6 through December 15, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, in the library’s Ossie Davis Theater. Music aficionado Robert Puleo continues to lead these popular workshops, which help participants gain confidence in singing, learn to sing in a chorale group, and have fun! The groups steadily gains repertoire for the culminating Holiday Performance, which will be presented to the public on Sunday, December 16, at 3:00 pm. The free workshops are made possible by the Lillian Robbins-Rick Englander Fund.
