Grandson of Former New York Governor Malcolm Wilson Running for Mayor of New Rochelle

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The New Rochelle Republican Party has nominated the grandson of a former Republican Governor to take on longtime incumbent Noam Bramson.

Brendon Conroy was nominated as the party’s candidate for Mayor tonight. Conroy is the grandson of former New York Governor Malcolm Wilson.

Malcolm Wilson became governor of New York in 1973 when Nelson Rockefeller resigned upon being appointed Vice President of the United States by Gerald Ford. Wilson served as Governor for just over 12 months after losing the 1974 gubernatorial election to Hugh Carey. Wilson previously served in the New York State Assembly from 1939 to 1958 and as Lieutenant Governor of New York from 1958 to 1973.

Brendon Conroy is the son of Cathy Conroy, a former City Council Member who was defeated by Noam Bramson in Bramson’s first run for elective office in 1995.

Conroy works as a real estate broker for Houlihan Lawrence.

Also nominated tonight were incumbents Lou Trangucci for District 1 and Albert Tarantino for District 2. Sarah Langlois, currently serving on the New Rochelle Public Library Board of Trustees, was nominated for District 5.

The City of New Rochelle races breakdown as follows:

Mayor: Noam Bramson (D) v Brendan Conroy (R)

District 1: Martha Lopez (D) v. Lou Trangucci (R)

District 2: Al Tarantino (R) unopposed

District 3: Yadira Ramos-Herbert (D) unopposed

District 4: Ivar Hyden (D) unopposed

District 5: Sara Kay (D) v. Sarah Langlois (R)

District 6: Liz Fried (D) unopposed

There may be two primary challenges within the Democratic Party: David Peters is considering a run in District 3, Shari Rackman is considering a run in District 6.

District 5 is now the “Battle of the Sara(h)s”

  3. His not-so-charming mother, Katharine Conroy, was roundly defeated by Bramson in 1995 for Mayor of New Rochelle. the people of the city dodged a bullet on that election. Let’s hope that history repeats itself!

  4. Not to worry. Those that religiously complain about potholes, lack of services and sky high taxes will once again vote for those response for these ills.

  5. Nelson Rockefeller resigned, and Malcolm Wilson became governor, in December of 1973, when Rockefeller went to work at the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans. He became Vice President in the fall of 1974.
