New Rochelle School Employee Removed From High School Due to Allegations of Inappropriate Texts with Students, Sources

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A long time school district employee was escorted out of New Rochelle High School on Friday.

Several independent sources tell Talk of the Sound that Steve D. Brown, TV/Media Specialist at New Rochelle High School and the manager of New Rochelle Educational Access Television, was removed from the building following complaints of “inappropriate text messages” sent students at the high school.

The District did not respond to requests for comment.

One source said after parents of the students complained that Brown had proposed filming female students he was suspended with pay and ordered to stay off school grounds. Another said “he’s done. He won’t be back” saying that Brown has been the subject of complaints in the past. Both sources asked not to be identified for fear of retaliation.

Brown was not at work on Monday and did not set up Audio/Video equipment for last night’s New Rochelle Board of Education meeting as he typically does to stream and record board meetings.

Brown was paid $81,410 in 2018, according to seethroughny.net.

Educational Access programming from NRED-TV is broadcast on Channel 30 in New Rochelle over Verizon Cable-TV and Channel 77 in New Rochelle on Altice Cable-TV.

  1. I’ve been waiting more than 20 years for this, so thank you Mr. Cox for finally putting my mind at ease. I guess I’m one of countless students with whom he was inappropriate, but at the time I was too young to understand what exactly was happening, even if it seemed like something was wrong.

Over the years I’ve considered contacting the school, the police, the Board of Education, or the media about the situation, but I’d also heard from teachers and other staff with whom I stayed in touch at the high school that everyone was aware of his inappropriate behavior and nothing was done about it. HOW CAN THAT BE JUSTIFIED??? Bringing up such issues is difficult, and in the end I never did because I couldn’t handle being dismissed again (it happened before in another context and it was awful!), even if in the back of my mind I kept waiting for the worst to happen to another student, as that seemed like a matter of time (then again, if he ever did cross the line, will we ever even know?). In fact, this website is the only outlet that covered this issue, which shows that my hesitation was well founded.

It’s strange, but I just cannot bring myself to write his name, so I won’t.

I am grateful for certain things he did for me, that must be said. I come from a broken home and was always neglected by my parents, so it was quite a change to have someone who seemed to care about me and also to have the media center as an escape from my horrible house. But he did act inappropriately often, and I would later find out many people were aware.

So what excuse do teachers and other staff and admin and the PRINCIPAL make for themselves? Nobody ever talked to me or any of the other students to warn us. They all turned a blind eye and only talked about his behavior with me after I’d graduated! They all knew and said nothing. We were just kids.

Thinking about everything now makes me quite sad. I was practically all alone, so to distance myself from him, however uncomfortable I felt at times, would mean having zero support. Not easy when you’re a troubled teenager. I do think he took advantage of his position and of my situation, but then again, the same can be said about other students.

I’m glad some parents cared enough about their kids to do something about this, but how shameful that it took the school decades to take this seriously!!! Though did they take it seriously? He was, after all, suspended WITH PAY. Shame! He’s certainly also due to retire, so my guess is the only reason anything was done at all is that. Yet another man that groomed kids will live out his life comfortably.

  2. I knew this guy. I was one of the members of media club back in high school. Shocking to learn. Any more updates on him as of now? I cannot find anything else.

  3. Wow what a shocker. I use to know him and see him everyday. I did not expect him to ever being involved in this. Sad.

  4. Mr. Brown has been acting very inappropriate with my son AJ, and to be honest, I don’t like that bro. That’s my boy he blood you heard. He should stop filming my son and asking him to make “mixes” for him.

  5. I am thrilled to find out Mr. Brown is finally being removed from the school. I brought up my concerns to administration many years ago. Sad that after that meeting students continued to be the target of Mr. Brown’s inappropriate attention. I applaud the current administration for removing him. Thrilled to hear about it.
