Man Struck by Drunk Driver in Downtown New Rochelle Dies

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A New Rochelle man has died two weeks after he was struck by a car in downtown New Rochelle.

Fernando Izazaga, 27, of New Rochelle, passed away at 5:40 p.m. after 12 days in an area hospital, according to family members who have announced a GoFundMe page to assist the family with the cost of funeral arrangements.

Johnny Gialanella, 27, of Yonkers, NY was charged on March 31st with Vehicular Assault 2nd, a class E felony and DWI-1st Offense, a misdemeanor.

Talk of the Sound has reached out to the New Rochelle Police Department and Westchester County District Attorney’s Office to determine if additional charges will be filed.

Shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday March 31st. a 27 year old male pedestrian and resident of New Rochelle. later identified as Fernando Izazaga, was struck at the intersection of Huguenot Street & Memorial Highway. He was treated at the scene by EMS & New Rochelle Fire Department personnel and subsequently transported to an area hospital. with serious head trauma.

The family issued the following statement:

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that after a long 12 days, Fernando passed yesterday 4/11/19 at 5:40pm. He fought so hard but unfortunately lost the fight after developing more complications. (We) set up a GoFund Me to assist our family lay him to rest next week sometime and the pouring support shows what an amazing young man he was whos life was unfairly taken too soon. He leaves behind a huge family and parents and siblings that have to pay the price for a drunk driver who tragically took his life.”
