NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Dozens of cops and bar patrons briefly blocked a stretch of North Avenue last night after New Rochelle police entered the Mangoville Soul Caribbean Restaurant at 134 North Avenue searching for a suspect who had fled police following two separate efforts at a traffic stop of the driver.
Police were after Michael Spand, 22, of the Bronx. A second man, Quatrell Daniels, 27, also of the Bronx, was arrested after attempting to interfere with Spand’s arrest, according to police.
Police say they attempted to pull Spand over twice in a span of 15 minutes — he initially escaped onto I-95 at Exit 16 and, moments later, returned to New Rochelle near the same location.
At 10:11 pm, an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle driving the wrong way on Main Street. The vehicle fled and the pursuit was terminated when the suspect vehicle entered I-95.
At 10:26 pm, a different officer located the same vehicle on North Avenue and Garden Street. A vehicle stop was attempted again but the vehicle fled to Mangoville at 134 North Avenue.
Several Officers followed the driver inside the restaurant and took him into custody.
As officers escorted Spand out, approximately 20 people from inside Mangoville came outside. One of them was Quatrell Daniels who was subsequently arrested.
Spand was charged with reckless driving, criminal possession of a weapon — 3rd degree (brass knuckles), unlawful possession of marijuana — 2nd degree, obstructing governmental administration — 2nd degree and unlawful fleeing of a police officer.
Daniels was charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration — 2nd degree and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana — 2nd degree.
