WHITE PLAINS, NY — An effort is underway to make public the records from a secret proceeding involving the office-involved shooting death of Kamal Flowers by New Rochelle Police officer Alec McKenna.
Richard St. Paul, the attorney representing the family of Kamal Flowers, has filed a formal request to the Westchester County DA to unseal the records in the Alec McKenna Grand Jury.
“Whenever a life is taken at the hands of those who are trusted to serve and protect the public, and whenever the circumstances leaves the most fundamental question of what happened open, the public’s interest in the truth and integrity of our justice system outweighs the secrecy of a Grand Jury proceedings as the trust rests in that secrecy,” said St. Paul.
St. Paul cited the successful motion by New York State Attorney General Leticia James to unseal and publicly release the grand jury minutes related to the investigation of Daniel Prude’s death. Prude, a Rochester resident, was also killed by a police officer.
St. Paul also quoted Mimi Rocah back to herself from a recent press release.
“With ‘transparency, accountability, and conviction integrity’ being of great importance to you, the Flowers family and the community are relying on you to help them understand why the grand jury decided against indictment,” wrote St. Paul.
