NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Mercy College has “corrected” an inaccurate statement about student eligibility regarding a scholarship-based summer math program that appeared to illegally discriminate against White students.
The Mathematical Modeling at Mercy College (M3C) Young Scholars was being offered under the requirement that applicants “must be a minority student”.
In a letter to students sent on April 14th, New Rochelle High School Mathematics Department Chair Xiomara Gonzalez exhorted teachers to encourage students to apply but made clear that applicants must be minority students. In her email, Gonzalez is quoting directly from an email sent by Karin Sansaricq. PT Project Administrator at Mercy College on behalf of the Program Director, Dr. Nagaraj Rao.
“Recently, Mercy College incorrectly provided information on a summer high school program that included inaccuracies about student eligibility,” said Mercy College spokesperson Laura Plunkett. “The College worked swiftly to address these inaccuracies and provide updated information to all partners.”
“Mercy College is committed to its mission of providing an opportunity for all students to transform their lives through higher education and regularly utilizes awarded grant money to provide support and resources in the communities we serve, in a manner that is consistent with all federal, state and local non-discrimination laws.”
Interim Superintendent of Schools Dr. Alex Marrero did not respond to questions.
