NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Three weeks after responding to a fatal trench collapse the New Rochelle Fire Department (Station 1) is conducting a live Trench-Rescue training at the Guion Place construction site, by the Remington Boys and Girls Club. Today’s scenario will help train firefighters on how to rescue victims in construction accidents.

The New Rochelle Fire Department’s collapse and rescue units assisted the rescue effort in Mamaroneck earlier this month when a man died in a trench collapse:

A worker died Tuesday afternoon when he became trapped in a trench collapse at a home under construction on Shore Acres Drive in the village of Mamaroneck.

Village police said officers and Mamaroneck Fire Department members responded to the home about 12:40 p.m. They found the man, who has not yet been identified, buried under dirt in the collapsed trench in the rear of the property (Larchmont Loop).

The NRFD response to the trench collapse in Mamaroneck occurred on May 4, the day after the New Rochelle Fire Department renamed Rescue 4 for Captain DiMaggio.

“Rescue 4 is very specialized. Everything that’s not fire is on here — rope rescue, water rescue, building collapse, vehicle restoration,” said New Rochelle Fire Chief Andrew Sandor explained the significance of the renaming. “Captain DiMaggio was very proficient with tools, and he brought that with him to the fire service.”

Developers NRP Group and Montesano construction provided site and trench access to NRFD.
