GOP Leaders Select Trump Ally Lee Zeldin to Challenge New York Governor Andrew Cuomo

ALBANY, NY — Suffolk County U.S. Rep. Lee Zeldin is the “presumptive nominee” for governor following a straw poll vote of Republican Party Monday county party chairs.

Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino and Andrew Giuliani are also running to take on Cuomo.

Straw Poll Results:

  • Lee Zeldin — 85%
  • Rob Astorino — 5%
  • Andrew Giuliani — 0%

Astorino says he intends to primary Zeldin.

“The 3 million Republicans throughout New York will be deciding who the strongest candidate is in next June’s primary, not a few dozen party insiders, many of whom have told me they were pressured into making an endorsement they weren’t ready to make,” Astorino said in a statement. “This early straw poll is meaningless, and eventually, I’ll be the straw that breaks Cuomo’s back next November.”

Lee Michael Zeldin is an American attorney, member of Congress, and officer in the United States Army Reserve. He has represented New York’s 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2015. He represents the eastern two-thirds of Suffolk County, including most of Smithtown, as well as the entirety of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold, Southampton, East Hampton, and Shelter Island, and a small portion of Islip.

During Donald Trump’s presidency, Zeldin was a staunch Trump ally. He prominently defended Trump during his first impeachment hearings in relation to the Trump–Ukraine scandal. After Trump lost the 2020 presidential election and made false claims of fraud, Zeldin objected to the certification of the election results in Congress. In April 2021, Zeldin announced his candidacy for governor of New York in 2022.
