NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A New Rochelle man is in critical condition after he exited his vehicle on the Cross-Westchester Expressway in the town of Greenburgh and was struck by a drunk driver operating a pick-up truck, according to New York State Police.
On June 26, 2021, at approximately 10:35 p.m., State Police were dispatched to a hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle on I-287.
A preliminary investigation determined that the driver of a 2010 Toyota Camry, Gabriel Zaragoza Castillo, 30, of New Rochelle, NY, pulled over on the right shoulder in the area of mile marker 3.3 westbound, to switch seats with the passenger. Castillo was struck when he exited his car as the Toyota was sideswiped by a pick-up truck which failed to stop.
The passenger of the Toyota, Yesenia Oseguera Aguilar, 30, of New Rochelle, NY, was not injured during the crash. Castillo suffered serious injuries and was transported to Westchester Medical Center.
While Troopers were responding to Westchester Medical to continue the investigation, they located a pick-up truck matching the description of the suspect vehicle on the Sprain Brook Parkway, parked off the shoulder. The 2008 Ford F350, bearing Ohio plates, also had damage that was consistent with parts that were left at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Ford, Eustaquio Vazquez Dominguez, 48, of Plain City, OH, was found to be intoxicated.
Dominguez was taken into custody and transported to SP Tarrytown, where he refused to provide a breath sample to determine the alcohol content in his system. State Police obtained a court order from Westchester County Court compelling Dominguez to provide a blood sample which was drawn at SP Tarrytown by a Town of Greenburgh Police Department EMS Paramedic.
Dominguez was charged with Vehicular Assault 2nd degree and Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Injury; both Class E Felonies. In addition, he was also charged with Driving While Intoxicated; an Unclassified Misdemeanor. He was arraigned and released on his own recognizance, to reappear in court at a later date.
Castillo remains in critical condition.
