NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The one question we have heard more and more as Independence Day approaches is, why no fireworks in New Rochelle this year.
There will be fireworks this year to celebrate the Declaration of Independence and the beginning of the American Revolution and the founding of what 13 years later became the United States of America, just not on July 4.
As we reported on May 19, the City of New Rochelle announced a postponement of The Spark the Sound Fireworks until Labor Day weekend on Friday evening, September 3rd.
Parks and Recreation Commissioner William Zimmermann told Talk of the Sound there was just not enough time to prepare for fireworks in July.
“The review of our annual “Spark the Sound” fireworks event with Fireworks by Grucci began in March,” said Zimmerman. “Because the company required production lead time of several months to manufacture our special, custom designed firework display, and with the uncertainty surrounding the permitting and safety of large-scale gatherings in light of New York State regulations, we requested a revision to our performance contract and rescheduled this event for a closing summer 2021 kickoff to Labor Day weekend on Friday, September 3.”
“Our fireworks are planned to return on July 4, 2022,” he added.
Jeff Edwards has a good round up of Independence Day celebrations in the Sound Shore area.
For those in need of a fireworks fix, try Rye Playland on July 9.
