NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A teenage girl assaulted an Uber driver with a knife Friday after a dispute with a second girl while in the driver’s vehicle.
Two juvenile females were charged with Assault returnable to Family Court and released on their own recognizance.
Two men were detained by police in the immediate vicinity shortly after the assault and found to be carrying loaded firearms. The guns were not used in the assault. Stock photos of each weapon below — not the actual weapons.
Omar Gaines, 18 years of age, of the Bronx was in possession of a 9mm Keltec handgun and charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd degree.
David Owens, 20 years of age, of the Bronx was in possession of a model P80 “Ghost Gun” loaded with a 33 round high-capacity magazine (pictured of above) and was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the 2nd degree and Unlawful Possession of Certain Feeding Devices (high-capacity magazine).
The victim was taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx where hospital staff deemed the injuries non-life-threatening, New Rochelle Police Captain J. Collins Coyne, Commander of the Criminal Investigation Division said.
New Rochelle police were called to the scene, in front of the Tower Café at 271 North, the Kaufman building, at about 2:25 p.m.. Radio cars and K-9 units continued to canvass the area in a radius of several blocks for an hour after the incident.
According to police, the incident began when an Uber driver picked up 5 passengers at New Roc City entertainment complex and shortly into their transport a verbal dispute ensued between the driver and a female juvenile passenger. The Uber stopped to discharge the passengers and the dispute became physical. During the physical dispute another female juvenile passenger stabbed the Uber driver in the chest 2 times. The driver was transported to Jacobi Hospital.
The 5 passengers fled on foot but were subsequently stopped by the police. Further investigation revealed that 2 adult passengers were in possession of illegal handguns, one of which was a “ghost gun” with no serial number and a high-capacity magazine.
The remaining male party was released as he was not involved in the crime.
Uber did not respond to a request for comment.
