NEW ROCHELLE, NY — The remnants of what was Hurricane Ida pummeled the New York Metro area overnight, bringing with it inches of rain, flooding and power outages.
Heavily populated areas of New York State are in a State of Emergency. 8 people are reported dead in the New York area as a result of Tropical Depression Ida — more than in Louisiana where Hurricane Ida made landfall as a Category 4 Hurricane.
GOVERNOR KATHY HOCHUL DECLARES STATE OF EMERGENCY IN RESPONSE TO RECORD-BREAKING FLOODING AS A RESULT OF TROPICAL DEPRESSION IDA
“Earlier tonight I declared a State of Emergency in New York State within the counties of Bronx, Dutchess, Kings, Nassau, New York, Orange, Putnam, Queens, Richmond, Rockland, Suffolk, Sullivan, Ulster, and Westchester in response to major flooding due to Tropical Depression Ida.
“Torrential rainfall has resulted in flash flooding, power outages, travel disruptions and damage in impacted areas posing a threat to public health and safety. I am directing State agencies, including the Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services, the Department of Transportation, Thruway Authority, and others to take appropriate and immediate action to help respond and recover from this disaster.
“This State of Emergency eliminates potential hurdles for local response activities and provides the necessary tools to make sure New Yorkers can quickly and safely recover. I encourage New Yorkers in these affected areas to please pay attention to local weather reports, stay off the roads and avoid all unnecessary travel during this time.”
Mamaroneck, prone to flooding, was the hardest hit with significant flooding and more than 6,000 customers without power. Mamaroneck firefighters rescued people from their homes, cars were submerged by rising flood waters, vehicles were stranded in the roadways.

Although the storm has passed, the Village of Mamaroneck has experienced significant damage.
Many streets in the Village are currently impassable making rescue efforts very difficult. In addition, over half of the Village does not have power and many people are stuck in flood damaged homes waiting for assistance from the Village’s first responders.
As a result, the Village is instituting a travel ban through 12 pm today, Thursday, September 2.
Additionally, residents operating generators are reminded that generators must be placed outside of your home. The Village has received a number of carbon monoxide alarms during the overnight hours that are diverting critical resources away from the rescue effort.
NOTIFICATION FROM MAMARONECK UNION FREE SCHOOL DISTRICT: Last night’s heavy rains and flooding caused significant damage to our school buildings and created unsafe conditions. As a result, all school buildings will be closed today, Thursday, September 2. All orientation and student activities are cancelled. Stay safe everyone.
Schools throughout the area — Rye public schools, Mamaroneck public schools, Iona College, The Ursuline School and others — are closed as a result of the weather. Flooding, unsafe conditions, structural damage and power outages have upended much of the Sound Shore area.
Transportation is suspended or delayed.
Bee-Line Bus/Paratransit Service Suspended Until Further Notice: service remains suspended until further notice due to flooding conditions caused by severe weather across Westchester County. Liberty Lines employees are out assessing the routes and should know more in a few hours about restoration time.

Trees & Wires Down / Some Streets Still Flooded / Please Use Caution. Pelham Manor is continuing its proactive and robust response to the extreme weather and flash flooding from last night. Last night’s storm was unprecedented and we thank our first responders, including the Police, Fire & DPW departments.Several trees and power lines throughout the village are down. In addition, several streets are still flooded and closed off. Please do not attempt to access/drive down a street that is flooded and please do not touch any down wires. If you can, please remain indoors at this time.
If you need your basement pumped of water, you may call the PMPD (914-738-8820) or PMFD (914-738-8824). They are keeping a list of houses to respond to. The time for response is unknown as emergency services are still responding to active emergencies.
CON EDISON RESTORING POWER TO CUSTOMERS AFFECTED BY REMNANTS OF TROPICAL STORM IDA
Con Edison crews are working to restore power to approximately 13,817 customers, including approximately 8,244 located in Westchester who lost power just after 12:02 am this morning as the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida swept through the region

The Village of Mamaroneck is under a State of Emergency. Please read the following eight items:
The travel ban that was announced at 6:00am has been extended until 5:00pm today, Thursday, September 2nd. This is to allow our Village’s first responder to assist residents who are stuck in flood damaged homes. Only emergency vehicles should be on the road. Please avoid all travel at this time.
To allow our first responders and emergency vehicles to travel, Mamaroneck Ave between Boston Post Road and Halstead Avenue is closed. Again, this is to allow our first responders and emergency vehicles to travel quickly through the Village.
Many of the abandoned cars in the Village have been towed to Vincent’s Garage at 636 Fenimore Road. If your car was towed, please contact Vincent’s at (914) 698-5252.
MTA Metro-North Railroad and Westchester Bee-Line Bus have announced that service across their systems is extremely limited. Please avoid all unnecessary travel at this time.
Except for emergency services, all Village Offices at 123 Mamaroneck Avenue and at 169 Mt. Pleasant Avenue are closed to regular business. Village offices as well as the Village Court are closed until Tuesday, September 7th. All Village Parks are closed today and Friday, September 3.
The Village’s largest park, Harbor Island Park – including the Boat Ramp and the Johnston Beach – is closed to the public indefinitely so that Harbor Island Park can serve as a staging area for emergency personnel.
The Department of Public Works will make every effort to pick up trash today and tomorrow. Please note that due to the situation, garbage pickup may be delayed. Residents can put out garbage on the curb and the DPW will make every effort to pick it up. Please note that Monday, September 6, is Labor Day. There will be no garbage collection on Monday, September 6.
The shelter at Mamaroneck High School remains open. Red Cross volunteers are on site to aid residents.

CON ED UPDATE 9/2 7 PM: Con Edison has restored power to 19,505 customers after the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida brought flooding and damaging winds to the region. The company plans to finish restoring power by Friday night to ninety five percent of the more than 32,000 customers who lost power after last night’s historic, hard-hitting storm. A total of 13, 216 customers are still without power. Con Edison estimates that ninety five percent of the affected customers in Westchester will be restored by midnight on Friday.
