Water Main Break in Blizzard in Downtown New Rochelle (video)

UPDATE 1:45 PM Suez replied to our inquiry this morning: “The issue in New Rochelle was not a main break but a broken cap on a dead end main. No customers were impacted as we continue to make repairs.”

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Suez Water is responding to a water main break at 10 LeCount Place and Main Street in downtown New Rochelle in front of Planet Fitness. Water is bubbling up through steel plates onto LeCount Place then flowing onto the street surface and sidewalk then down Main Street towards Harrison Street.

A crew from Creamer (Suez) day-lighted at the site on Friday to dig a large hole. The hole was covered with steel plates at the end of the day.

UPDATE 8:43 AM: Suez still on scene. Creamer (Suez contractor) truck has arrived . NRPD patrol car set up on Main Street. News12 is out there now, did one live shot. We contacted Con Edison and Suez for details on expected repair time. Given the conditions, it may be awhile. Continue to avoid area.

UPDATE: 9:09 AM. Suez has sealed the water main. No water bubbling up through the steel plates. Continue to avoid the area but traffic on Main Street can pass, not on LeCount Place.

EDITOR’S NOTE. This location is in front of my new residence (The Stella) directly below my apartment. I was monitoring the weather throughout the evening. There was no water bubbling up at midnight when I last looked out my window. When I looked out at 6:30 am I unexpectedly saw blacktop and realized water was covering the street below. I shot a short video clip and posted to Twitter (below). As the skies brightened I went outside to shoot more video. I took off my glove to hold my phone/camera and within 10 minutes had frostbite and had to get back indoors.. It is very cold, well below zero windchill on that corner. Be careful out there. Best to stay home.

UPDATE 9:25 AM: The Stella at 10 LeCount Place has water service so apparently unaffected. Planet Fitness, Marriott, Splendid Diner all have water service.

UPDATE 10:31: Creamer excavation crew on scene now. Unofficial, Suez was putting in a new main which is why the cut off is not affecting customers.
