Manhole Explosion, Fire on North Avenue Across from New Rochelle Police Headquarters

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — A manhole cover explosion early this morning rocked North Avenue, not far from the New Rochelle Police Department. No injuries or property damage was reported.

The incident occurred shortly before 6 am at 470 North Avenue, next to the Islamic Center Of New Rochelle, across from Mariano Rivera’s church, Refugio de Esperanza.

North Avenue was closed off between Fifth Avenue and Lincoln Avenue. New Rochelle firefighters responding to the scene found an active fire, which they quickly knocked down.

Con Edison was called to expedite a response, but Con Edison said there would be a three-hour delay for an underground crew. A supervisor was dispatched.

  1. It’s a nightmare trying to get around New Rochelle. Too much construction, detours, closed roads, etc. What caused the explosion?
