NEW ROCHELLE, NY — New Rochelle High School Principal Dr. Dagberto Artiles issued a statement late Friday in response to a viral video circulated on social media depicting a brutal assault of a student by another student on Wednesday.

Dear New Rochelle High School Family:

The high school administration is aware of allegations made against a student on social media this week, which appear to have contributed to an altercation with another student on school grounds. The administration responded immediately and appropriately to address the situation.

The high school is taking a tiered approach to address all reported allegations, and support the social and emotional well-being of our students through an active engagement with our students, teachers, and community. The first aspect of our tiered approach utilizes a school-wide and systematic lens, which includes identifying mental health resources, school personnel, and continuous development of our restorative practices and wellness. School counselors will continue providing, as needed, daily assistance to both individuals and groups. Additionally, we continue to make good use of the counselors’ corner in the cafeteria, where students can have informal conversations with guidance counselors during lunch.

Our school continues to create an environment in which the student voice is central to our daily school experience. We have collaborated greatly with our student government, student advisory groups, and grade-level cabinets. Students are encouraged to continue using the channels of communication that have been created over the last few months.

Our top priority continues to be the safety and well-being of our students and our entire school community. Please know that we will investigate any concern that is reported to us. Additionally, students and families are reminded that school counselors, administrators, teachers, and staff are always available to assist with any issues or matters that concern your child or family. We encourage students to bring concerns to a trusted adult as a first course of action. We are here for you.

Also, as we have previously shared, we encourage parents and guardians to monitor our youths’ social media activity. Certain types of social media posts can cause further disruptions that have the potential to directly impact our school environment. Parents and guardians can support efforts by:

Discussing with your child the consequences of posting inappropriate content or threats on social media. It is important to emphasize that everything on social media can quickly become public, even if shared with only one person.

Alerting your child’s school and law enforcement if you or your child see a social media post of potential concern or learn about a potentially alarming or dangerous situation.

Monitoring your child’s online and social media behavior and having open, positive conversations with them.

Please know that we remain committed to continuing our mission of educating our children academically, socially, and emotionally while keeping them safe and healthy.

Sincerely,

New Rochelle High School Administration
