New Rochelle High School Students Plan Walkout Against District Silencing Victims of Sexual Assault

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Students at New Rochelle High School are planning to walkout out of school on Monday at 12 pm to protest what some students claim is the “silencing of victims of sexual assault”.

Some students have complained that the district had historically not done anything to assist students who report inappropriate sexual contact, sexual behavior and sexual assault. These students have posted numerous comments on Instagram posts about our recent reporting of a viral video depicting a student kicking, punching and stomping a defenseless student on a dual-use sports field in back of New Rochelle High School. The student seen attacking the student was suspended.

New Rochelle Police Captain J. Collins Coyne, Commander of the Criminal Investigation Division, said the student who was attacked in the viral video filed a criminal complaint with New Rochelle Police on Thursday.

Dozens of students commenting on Talk of the Sound Instagram posts (links below) claim the incident was precipitated by some undefined, unsubstantiated, and mushrooming series of allegations of sexual assault. Some claim there is “proof” and some say there are pending police complaints.

It is difficult to understand from the social media comments the exact nature of the allegations, but police have said they have not received any complaints of sexual misconduct related to the viral video. Made aware of the allegations on Talk of the Sound Instagram posts by this reporter, Coyne said police are looking into those claims.

Some students claim there is a history of school officials acting disrespectfully to students who report incidents of sexual misconduct.

Students say school officials told them the school will not interfere with the walkout, but it is not a school-approved event.

The walkout is expected to end with students gathering on the same dual-use sports field in back of New Rochelle High School where the viral video was recorded.
