Iditarod Musher and Sled Dog to Visit New Rochelle Public Library 4/3

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Karen Land, a three-time participant in the 1,049-mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race across Alaska, her Alaskan husky, Noggin and her corgi-spring mix Chloe, will be at the New Rochelle Public Library on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at 2:00 pm.

Karen will share her love of mushing, an ancient form of dog-powered transportation dating back over 3,000 years and speak about her experience training for the Iditarod, an event steeped in Indigenous subsistence cultures, mining and Alaskan state history. The Iditarod – the Last Great Race – was first introduced in the 1970’s when the widespread use of snowmobiles for winter travel threatened to make dog mushing obsolete. Along with the Iditarod, many other races in Alaska, the Lower 48, Canada, and other countries such as Norway and Russia continue to keep the sled dog lifestyle active and vibrant across the world.

Since 2000, Karen has given over a thousand talks in almost every state. In addition to meeting Karen’s dogs, attendees will also see Karen’s sled and gear. The sport of mushing, and Alaska inspire a diverse audience, making the event interesting for children, teens and adults. Animal lovers of all ages are encouraged to attend.
