Police Union Slams New York Bail Reform Laws
MAMARONECK, NY (May 29, 2022) — A man charged with making terroristic threats after allegedly threatening to shoot police officers and employees at Derecktor Shipyard two days ago was apprehended this morning in Yonkers then released without bail, according to a statement on the Village of Mamaroneck Police PBA Facebook Page.
Donald Kearney, age 70, of Jersey City, New Jersey was charged with Making a Terrorist Threat, a D Felony, and Aggravated Harassment, an A Misdemeanor.
“This is completely unacceptable especially with the defendant’s criminal history and in light of the most recent events that took place in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX,” VOMPD PBA said on a Facebook post. “The current bail laws of New York State continue to fail the citizens they claim to protect.
On May 27, Village of Mamaroneck Police responded to a report of a male making threats to shoot employees at Derecktor Shipyard and also Village of Mamaroneck PD personnel.
VOMPD Officers and Detectives conducted an investigation and issued a warrant for Donald Kearney. He was apprehended in Yonkers on May 29.
Donald Kearney was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.
Kearney was transported to White Plains Hospital for a psychological evaluation and was released within two hours.
The VOMPD PBA called the incident a failure of the system not only to citizens of the Village of Mamaroneck but also to the Members of the Village of Mamaroneck PBA.
“The members of the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department are dedicated to protecting those they serve, but we are also feeling the failure of poor legislation.”
