Bronx Man Injures 2 in New Rochelle Car Crash, Now Facing Felony Drug Charge

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (August 4, 2022) — A Bronx man was arrested Monday afternoon when state police found illegal drugs on his person after he rear-ended another car on the New England Thruway in New Rochelle.

Details: Angel Almonte, 26, of Bronx, NY was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance – 3rd degree, a Class B Felony and Obstructing Governmental Administration – 2nd degree, a Class A Misdemeanor following a two-car personal injury crash on I-95 in New Rochelle.

Preliminary investigation: State Police determined that on August 1, 2022, at approximately 3:00 p.m., Almonte was traveling at an unsafe speed in a 2022 BMW. He was observed making multiple unsafe lane changes, and following too closely before the crash. While traveling southbound near mile marker 7.0, Almonte struck a 2013 Volkswagen Jetta from behind.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Maria L. Miano, 53, of New Rochelle, and a passenger in the vehicle, were both transported to Montefiore New Rochelle Hospital for minor injuries.

Drugs and toy gun found: During the crash investigation, Troopers on the scene observed Almonte throw what appeared to be a handgun over a fence along the right shoulder of the roadway. Upon locating the gun, it was determined to be a toy Glock with a black drum magazine. Almonte was detained and searched, which revealed he was in possession of approximately 20 grams of Ecstasy.

Almonte processed at SP New Rochelle, then transported to the New Rochelle Police Department to await arraignment at the New Rochelle City Court.
