MAMARONECK, NY (August 10, 2022) — A VMPD officer conducting a routine patrol on third shift engaged a suspicious vehicle on the 1500 block of East Boston Post Road, setting off a pursuit which led to the apprehension of a suspect in several burglaries in Connecticut.
Why it matters: Pry bars and hammers found in the vehicle suggest the suspect was planning to commit burglaries in the area.
On August 8, at approximately 2:36 AM, a vehicle was observed parked and idling with its lights off in the parking lot of a business that was closed for the evening.
As the officer entered the parking lot in his marked patrol car, the driver of the vehicle immediately exited the parking lot and fled the location. The officer followed the vehicle for 1.3 miles until it crashed near North Barry Avenue and First Street, a short distance from the on-ramp to I-95.
Officers from multiple agencies converged on the scene.

K-9 search yields suspect: After determining the vehicle had no occupants inside, a perimeter was established and a thorough search of the area conducted with the assistance of a K-9 unit from Peekskill PD. The suspect was located hiding in the backyard of a residence and taken into custody without incident.
Stolen ride: The vehicle driven by the suspect had been reported stolen out of New York City on August 1, 2022.
Suspect charged: Rickford A. Vyphuis, 32, of Queens, NY was arrested Monday by VMPD and was charged with multiple crimes.
