MAMARONECK, NY (October 12, 2022) — A stretch of Mamaroneck Avenue in the Mamaroneck-Harrison area is closed as the county bomb squad deals with dynamite uncovered by construction workers.

Westchester County Police responded to the Mamaroneck Avenue Bridge at Saxon Drive at about 10:30 a.m. after construction workers who were doing excavating work discovered what appeared to be an old stick of dynamite with wires attached.

The Hazardous Devices Unit, known informally as the Bomb Squad, is working to assess the device and determine how to safely remove it.

Motorists in the Mamaroneck-Harrison area are advised to seek an alternate route of travel through this area.

UPDATE 4:58 PM: Westchester County Police unearthed a set of wires in an old boring hole that were very degraded. The hole was cleared and a camera was put down it. No stick of dynamite was found or any powder that could cause an explosion. In the event any dynamite was left behind, it apparently disintegrated/dispersed over time. Or maybe it was just wires that were left behind. WCPD Bomb Squad officers consulted with a construction blasting expert who agreed with the conclusion that there was/is no hazard or threat of an explosion.

That boring hole is believed to be associated with a project from about 70 years ago.

The road reopened around 2:30 p.m. Work on the waterline project resumed around 2:50 p.m
