NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 12, 2023) — The City of New Rochelle has announced a new summer employment program for youth and young adults with special needs, in partnership with Volunteer New York! and Access Equestrian.

The program, which will run for six weeks from July to August, will provide participants with job readiness skills, training, and hands-on work experience at Access Equestrian, an adaptive riding program that serves people with disabilities.

The program is open to New Rochelle residents ages 14-21 who have special needs such as autism, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, or physical disabilities. The program will pay $15 per hour and operate 20-25 hours per week.

The goal of the program is to help participants develop social skills, confidence, and independence, as well as to expose them to potential career paths in the equestrian field. Participants will learn about horse care, grooming, feeding, tack, barn management, and safety. They will also assist with the daily operations of Access Equestrian, such as setting up equipment, cleaning stalls, and interacting with clients.

The program is part of the New Rochelle Youth Bureau’s annual Summer Employment initiative, which offers a variety of job opportunities for young people in the city. The Youth Bureau works with local employers and organizations to create meaningful work experiences that foster personal and professional growth.

The deadline to apply for the Access Equestrian program is May 12. Interested applicants can visit www.newrochelleny.com/youthjobs for more information and to download an application form. Applicants must also submit a letter of recommendation from a teacher or counselor who can attest to their special needs and suitability for the program.
