State Officials Crack Down on Pesticide Violations in Westchester County

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 14, 2023) — Environmental conservation officers from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation conducted a pesticides saturation detail in Westchester County on April 19, issuing 12 tickets for violations of state pesticide laws.

The detail focused on locations in Rye, Eastchester, Bronxville, Mamaroneck, New Rochelle, Scarsdale and Harrison. The officers were assisted by employees from the department’s Bureau of Pesticides.

The violations included unlawful storage of pesticides, operating an unregistered pesticide business and possession of unregistered pesticides. Some of the tickets were also for environmental quality violations not directly related to pesticide enforcement.

The department said the detail was part of its efforts to protect public health and the environment from the improper use and disposal of pesticides. The department regulates the sale and use of pesticides in New York State and enforces compliance with state and federal laws.

Pesticides are substances intended to prevent, destroy or repel pests such as insects, weeds, rodents or fungi. They can pose risks to human health and wildlife if not handled or applied correctly.

The department advises consumers to hire only licensed pesticide applicators and to read and follow label directions when using pesticides. The department also encourages consumers to use nonchemical methods of pest control whenever possible.

The tickets issued during the detail are returnable to local courts and carry potential fines ranging from $250 to $5,000 per violation.
