New Rochelle Police Officers Honored for Rescuing Dog Trapped in Sewer

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (May 19, 2023) — The City of New Rochelle’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion today honored New Rochelle Police Sergeant Jason Redner, PO Joshua Garcia, PO Ricardo Almeida, PO John Care and PO Deivy Martinez for rescuing a dog trapped in a sewer. The incident occurred on April 8, 2023.

At about 10:41 pm that night, The Humane Society of Westchester at New Rochelle called the New Rochelle Police Department to request assistance with a dog stuck in a sewer on the Church Street extension near Trinity School.

Responding police officers lured the with their dinner to coax him out close enough so he could be rescued. The dog was wearing a harness and leash when he was rescued but had no ID and no microchip.

The Humane Society of Westchester at New Rochelle has named the dog Leonardo, after the Teenage Ninja Turtle, turtles created when four baby turtles were exposed to radioactive ooze, transforming them into humanoids. The turtles live in a sewer and fight crime in New York City.
