NEW ROCHELLE, NY (April 16, 2024) — So, you want to save hundreds of dollars a year on your electric bill?

You can opt out of Sustainable Westchester at any time without penalties or fees.

How do I know if I was forced into Sustainable Westchester?

Grab your Con Ed bill and turn to page 2.

If you see your energy supplier is CCA-CONSTELLATION NEW ENERGY INC then your “Messages from your electricity supplier:” will mention Sustainable Westchester. Sorry to say, but you have been had, in the form of hundreds of dollars in unnecessary overages on your electric bill.

How do I get out of this terrible deal?

One way you know Sustainable Westchester is a rip-off is that you are required to give a reason why you wish to opt-out of a program you never chose in the first place. Worse, Sustainable Westchester says they may contact you regarding your request to opt-out (to convince you not to opt-out).

We recommend selecting “I do not agree with opt out enrollment” or, under Other, “None of your damn business!” If they do call, just say you want to opt-out and will not discuss your decision.” If that fails, try “bugger off”.

Why should you opt-out of Sustainable Westchester and switch back to Con Edison?

Sustainable Westchester charges, on average, about 30-40% more for electric supply charges than Con Edison. Electric supply charges make up about 35% of your electric bill. That adds up. With rampant inflation, why pay more to light your house when you have a choice?

Writing in The Journal News, David McKay Wilson reported:

A Tax Watch analysis found that Sustainable Westchester customers in 23 Westchester municipalities have paid an estimated $48 million more in electric supply charges over the first 16 months of the consortium’s fixed-rate 24-month contract for clean energy compared to what they would have paid with Con Edison’s variable monthly rates.

Municipalities served by Con Edison that are part of the two-year contract with Sustainable Westchester, expiring Oct. 30, are: Ardsley, Bedford, Croton-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Greenburgh, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, Larchmont, Mamaroneck town, Mamaroneck village, Mount Kisco, New Castle, New Rochelle, Ossining town, Ossining village, Peekskill, Pelham village, Pleasantville, Rye city, Rye Brook, Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown, Tuckahoe, and White Plains.

Municipalities served by NYSEG with a one-year Sustainable Westchester contract, expiring Dec. 31, are: Bedford, Lewisboro, North Salem, and Somers.

Yonkers has a one-year contract with Sustainable Westchester that is expiring Dec. 31.
