Alarm came in at 6:40 AM, automatic alarm plus multiple phone calls. Heavy fire on arrival out of two windows in apartment 3L. Crews had a 400’ stretch of hose, down the length of the building and up the stairs. Fire coming out of apartment on arrival.
Firefighters worked to keep fire contained to apartment, important in a building like this, lot of wood and void spaces in the walls.
After knocking down the fire, crews performed search of apartment and found two victims, one in each bedroom, both unresponsive. Crews began CPR and got the patients to the street, where ambulance crews took over resuscitation. Unfortunately, neither victim survived.
Victims were a mother Maria Arreola, 47, and her son Andrew Salomon, 26, both of 30 Eastchester Rd., New Rochelle.
Cause of the fire electrical.
Investigators located an electrical outlet overloaded with extension cords. Fire deemed to be not suspicious.
Fire in Apartment 3L; Building Department posted apartments 1L, 2L, 3L, and 4L unfit for occupancy. The building owner has sent a cleanup crew, and the building owner is working with the Red Cross and the Fuller Center to help displaced residents.
