Busy Mail Thieves Hit Mamaroneck, Pelham, Greenburgh Then Crash into Police Officer

MAMARONECK, NY (July 15, 2024) — Three men were apprehended by police in Greenburgh, NY following a series of mail theft incidents, police say.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at approximately 5:15 am, the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department received a

911 call from a witness who observed three suspicious males attempting to steal mail from the mailbox at the Mamaroneck Post Office located at 309 Mt. Pleasant Avenue.

Officers responded to the area; however, the vehicle fled the scene prior to their arrival. A description of the suspects and their vehicle matched an earlier call from the

Village of Pelham Police Department, in which a similar car and suspects fled from officers after attempting to steal mail from a mailbox.

On Friday, July 12, 2024, at approximately 4:10 am, the Greenburg Police Department observed the same vehicle and attempted to stop it. In their attempt to flee from police, the vehicle struck a police officer in his vehicle. The suspects exited their vehicle and fled on foot. A perimeter was established, and officers from the New York State Police, Westchester County Department of Public Safety, and the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department

responded to assist in locating the suspects.

The Postal Inspector was notified and also responded to assist in the investigation.

Three suspects were apprehended placed under arrest and charged by the Greenburgh Police

Department.

One of the defendants was identified as Mr. Joseph A. Tussen, a 24-year-old male from the Bronx. Mr. Tussen was positively identified as one of the males stealing mail from the mailbox on the morning of July 10th in the Village of Mamaroneck. He was also in possession of a belt, several glue traps, and a $14,000 check which had been placed in that mailbox earlier in the day.

Tussen was arraigned in the Village of Mamaroneck Court and released on his own recognizance with a future court date.
