Man Charged with BWI After Boats Collide off Rye Coast

RYE, NY (July 23, 2024) — The operator of a boat was charged with Boating While Intoxicated after he collided with another boat on Friday.

On July 19th at approximately 10:00 pm, Bay Constables from the City of Rye Police Marine Unit responded to a “mayday” distress call just south of Milton Harbor. Upon their arrival, they found that two pleasure vessels that had collided in the dark conditions while transiting Long Island Sound. The collision resulted in two victims being ejected into the water and numerous injuries to the occupants.

The Bay Constables rendered medical care and facilitated transport to waiting Port Chester-Rye-Rye Brook EMS units. During the subsequent investigation, Gareth Ederer, 62 of Thornwood, who was the operator of one of the vessels, was arrested for Boating While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor.

Mr. Ederer was issued an appearance ticket to Rye City Court and released on his own recognizance.
