Mamaroneck PD Traffic Stops Result in a Pair of Felony Arrests

MAMARONECK, NY (August 22, 2024) — Village of Mamaroneck Police made a pair of unrelated felony arrests following traffic stops over a two-day period earlier this month.

Mount Vernon Man

On August 2, the Village of Mamaroneck Police Department received a BOLO alert from New York State Police regarding a vehicle suspected of being involved in a stolen vehicle organization. LPR cameras showed the suspected vehicle recently active in the Mamaroneck area. That same morning, at approximately 9:45 AM, officers observed the vehicle in the 700 block of Mamaroneck Avenue and conducted a motor vehicle stop. Upon further investigation, and with the assistance of New York State Police investigators, it was determined that the operator of the vehicle had defaced the vehicle’s legitimate VIN# and disguised it to register the vehicle in another state. The vehicle was positively identified as having been stolen out of New York City on January 2, 2024.

Arrest & Charges

Marcel Coates, 25, of Mount Vernon, NY

Criminal Possession of Stolen Property — 2 (Motor Vehicle), a C Felony

(8x) Illegal Possession of a Vehicle Identification Number, an E Felony

Following his arrest, Coates was transported to VMPD Headquarters. He was arraigned in the Village of Mamaroneck Court and released on his own recognizance.

Bronx Man

On August 3, at approximately 1:50 PM, a VMPD officer conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle at the intersection of Mamaroneck Avenue and Palmer Avenue for an improperly displayed Georgia temporary registration. After a thorough investigation, the officer determined that the displayed Georgia registration was fraudulent, as it did not match the VIN #, make, model, or color of the motor vehicle.

Angelo Mayes, 42, of Bronx, NY

Criminal Possession of a Forged Instrument — a C Felony

Following his arrest, Mayes was transported to VMPD Headquarters. He was arraigned in the Village of Mamaroneck Court and released on his own recognizance.
