RYE, NY (March 12, 2025) — On Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 7:37 p.m., Rye Police Officers responded to a call at the Rye Colony Apartments, located at 1 Peck Ave, following reports of several males fleeing an abandoned vehicle. Arriving on the scene, officers discovered a black 2025 Nissan Altima with New York registration LRF2969, parked but still running, with three flat tires. The vehicle matched the description of one pursued by the Greenwich Police Department just 17 minutes earlier, at 7:20 p.m., in connection to an attempted vehicle larceny in Greenwich, Connecticut.
Greenwich PD had attempted to stop the Nissan, deploying “stop sticks” to disable it, but the suspects evaded capture and crossed into Rye. The Rye Police Dispatcher received multiple calls from residents reporting that the vehicle’s occupants were fleeing through backyards in the area. One officer spotted a male dressed in all black sprinting up Beaty Ct toward a wooded dead-end. When the officer tried to detain him, the suspect resisted, pulling away and running toward Thistle Ln. After a brief foot chase, the individual surrendered and was arrested. He was identified as 19-year-old Muhammad S. Abdulmalik from the Bronx.
With assistance from the Port Chester Police Department, a second suspect, 20-year-old Yadiel Baez from Waterbury, Connecticut, was apprehended nearby shortly after. Both individuals were taken to Rye Police Headquarters, where they were processed, fingerprinted, and charged with Obstructing Governmental Administration in the Second Degree (Penal Law 195.05 01), a Class A Misdemeanor.
The incident underscores the quick coordination between local law enforcement agencies, as Greenwich, Rye, and Port Chester police worked together to apprehend the suspects. The abandoned Nissan, left with flat tires from the earlier pursuit, remains a key piece of evidence linking the attempted larceny to the chase’s dramatic conclusion in Rye.
Abdulmalik and Baez are scheduled to appear in Rye City Court on March 25, 2025, at 9:00 a.m. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities yet to confirm if additional charges or suspects are involved. Residents of Rye Colony Apartments and surrounding areas expressed relief at the swift resolution, though the incident has sparked conversations about cross-border crime and safety in the quiet suburban community.
