NEW ROCHELLE, NY (March 19, 2025) — A violent confrontation at a New Rochelle gas station has left a father hospitalized and two men in custody, police said, following a chaotic scene that unfolded over the weekend.
On Saturday, March 15, at around 6:30 p.m., New Rochelle Police Department officers responded to reports of a physical altercation at the gas station on the corner of North Avenue and Lincoln Avenue.
The scene is just a few feet from the location where Jerrel Garris was shot by a New Rochelle Police Detective on July 3, 2023.
What police encountered was a bloody dispute that led to the arrest of two local men: Chesterfield Bowen, 60, and Calvin Holder, 31, both residents of New Rochelle.
According to authorities, officers first spotted a gray Subaru attempting to flee the scene onto North Avenue. After pulling the vehicle over, they found the driver—a man whose identity has not been released—suffering from a severe head injury. The victim told police he had been struck with a metal object during the dispute. Emergency Medical Services quickly arrived and transported him to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Back at the gas station, officers identified Bowen standing near his vehicle. Evidence at the scene pointed to Bowen as the primary suspect in the assault, and he was taken into custody without resistance. Bowen now faces a charge of Assault in the First Degree, a B Felony under New York State Penal Law, which could carry significant prison time if convicted.
The situation escalated further when the victim’s family and friends arrived, visibly distraught. Amid the tension, the victim’s son, Calvin Holder, was seen by officers breaking the side mirror off Bowen’s vehicle in a clear act of retaliation. Holder, 31, was promptly arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree, an E Felony.
The incident has rattled the New Rochelle community, with the gas station—a busy hub at the intersection of two major avenues—becoming the unlikely stage for a family’s anguish and a suspect’s alleged violence. Police have not released further details about the motive behind the initial dispute or the condition of the victim, who remains in the hospital.
The investigation is ongoing, and both Bowen and Holder are awaiting arraignment.
