NEW ROCHELLE, NY (April 12, 2025) — The City of New Rochelle is accepting applications for its newly formed Youth Justice Advisory Committee (YJAC), aimed at advancing support and policy solutions for youth justice, city officials announced.
The YJAC, established by the City Council, will include 15 members appointed by the City Manager. The committee will consist of eight young adult members, with at least five having experience with the criminal justice system, three adult community members, and four non-voting members: one each from the City of New Rochelle staff, the New Rochelle City Council, the City School District of New Rochelle, and the New Rochelle Board of Education. Outgoing members of the Justice Ambassadors Youth Council will receive special consideration for young adult positions.
The committee will meet monthly and present biannual reports to the City Council with assessments and proposed solutions. Appointments are for three-year terms and are unpaid volunteer positions.
“The establishment of the Youth Justice Advisory Committee, composed of both adults and youth, is an important step in shaping a more responsive and effective justice system for our young people,” said Mayor Yadira Ramos-Herbert. “By bringing together diverse voices, this committee will provide valuable insights and recommendations that promote positive outcomes for youth.”
The YJAC aims to enhance public safety, create opportunities for young people to reach their potential, and foster intergenerational learning across New Rochelle’s community. It will collaborate with organizations like the New Rochelle City Court Opportunity Youth Part, New Rochelle Community Justice Center, City School District of New Rochelle, and Choice of NY to strengthen the city’s Youth Justice ECO-system (Equitable Community Outcomes).
Interested applicants must submit a resume, cover letter, and contact information, including qualifications and interest in serving, through the city’s website or in person at the Office of the City Clerk at City Hall, 515 North Avenue, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications are due by May 9, 2025, at 4:30 p.m.
