RYE, NY (April 24, 2025) — A New York City man was arrested after attempting to withdraw $20,000 from a Webster Bank account using a fraudulent identification card, Rye police said.
Officers from the City of Rye Police Department responded to Webster Bank at 72 Purchase St. on April 23, 2025, following a report of a person trying to cash a check with a possible fraudulent ID. The incident occurred around 3:00 p.m.
According to police, a bank teller reported that a man, later identified as 48-year-old Jose Urena of New York City, entered the bank wearing a suit jacket and a hat. Urena requested to withdraw $20,000 from a Webster Bank account. The teller, suspicious of the transaction, contacted the bank’s fraud department, which confirmed the account holder was not in New York and had not authorized any withdrawal.
Urena presented a Connecticut ID card bearing the victim’s information but featuring Urena’s photo. The teller continued to question Urena until Rye officers arrived and placed him under arrest.
Urena was charged with possession of a forged instrument in the third degree and criminal impersonation in the second degree, both class A misdemeanors. He was released with a desk appearance ticket and is scheduled to appear in Rye City Court on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, at 9:00 a.m.
