PORT CHESTER, NY (April 24, 2025) — Port Chester firefighters responded to a structure fire on Putnam Avenue on the evening of April 23, 2025, at approximately 8:00 p.m., following multiple reports of a fire, the Port Chester Fire Department announced.

Units arrived on the scene within one minute of dispatch and encountered a two-story home with visible smoke. The homeowner informed crews of an active fire in the basement.

Firefighters deployed a 1¾-inch handline and made an aggressive interior attack through the basement and first floor, successfully confining the majority of the fire to the basement and preventing further spread.

A portable fire extinguisher used by the homeowner prior to the fire units’ arrival was not sufficient to fully extinguish the fire but played a critical role in slowing its progression, aiding in overall containment efforts.

The Port Chester Fire Department thanked all members and mutual aid partners that responded to assist at the scene and in covering the village. Responding units included Port Chester FD units 2392, 2393, 2398, E60, E61, E62, E63, E64, TL2, R40, and R41, along with Port Chester PD, Port Chester EMS, Battalion 11, and the Westchester County Cause & Origin Team. Mutual aid came from Rye Brook FD (Ladder 30), City of Rye FD (2422, Engine 192), Purchase FD (2412, 2413, Engine 241), Town of Mamaroneck FD (2233, Rescue 6), and Valhalla FD FAST Team (2481, Rescue 9).
