New Rochelle Schools Face Massive Layoffs Amid Budget Crisis — 76 Pink Slips

Written By: Robert Cox

NEW ROCHELLE, NY (April 24, 2025) — The City School District of New Rochelle will lay off 54 full-time pedagogical and administrative staff members and 22 full-time equivalent hourly employees to address a $33 million budget deficit for the 2025-2026 school year, Superintendent Dr. Corey W. Reynolds announced.

The district plans to eliminate 193 positions overall, with most reductions achieved through natural attrition, including retirements, resignations, and vacant positions. However, 76 staff members, including teachers, counselors, and support staff, will face layoffs. Affected employees will receive hand-signed letters from Reynolds stating the layoffs are due to workforce reduction, not performance, and will be placed on a “Preferred Eligibility List” for seven years, prioritizing them for future openings.

“This has been a very difficult budget year for our district,” Reynolds said. “We are speaking about people—our valued people—with their own families, rents, and mortgages. They are our colleagues and friends, and we acknowledge this will affect their livelihoods and futures.”

Layoffs include seven central administration roles, such as the Director of Family and Community Engagement and Medical Director, and two positions, Director of Technology and Director of World Languages, that will not be replaced. Two middle school deans and various instructional staff, including teachers of English, math, and world languages, will also be cut across New Rochelle High School, Albert Leonard Middle School, and Isaac E. Young Middle School. Elementary schools, including Barnard, Columbus, and Trinity, will lose classroom teachers and specialists.

Hourly workforce reductions include five cleaners, eight general school aides, and nine lunch monitors. Affected staff will remain employed through June 30, with notifications issued now to allow time for job searches during the teacher hiring season.

Reynolds noted the state budget, still unadopted, could alter plans. “If the district receives more state aid than expected, we will restore positions that are most forward-facing to our students,” he said.

The district encourages community participation in a public budget hearing on May 6 at New Rochelle High School’s Whitney Auditorium and voting on May 20. Questions can be sent to budgetquestions@nredlearn.org.

“We appreciate your partnership and support as we move ahead with our budget process,” Reynolds said.
