NEW ROCHELLE, NY (March 10, 2026) — The New Rochelle City School District is among several districts participating in a regional grant awarded through Westchester BOCES as part of a statewide funding initiative announced by the New York State Education Department.

The BOCES consortium will receive $175,000 per year for three years, totaling $525,000, to support programs for students experiencing homelessness.

Participating districts in the consortium include Bedford, Greenburgh, Hawthorne-Cedar Knolls, Irvington, New Rochelle, Ossining, Peekskill, Pleasantville, Rye Neck, Tuckahoe and the Tarrytowns.

The funding comes from the federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act and is intended to help school districts provide services to students experiencing homelessness. According to the state education department, those services may include tutoring and educational support, transportation to keep students in their original schools, early childhood programs and services delivered in shelters or temporary housing.

Chancellor Lester W. Young, Jr. said, “Children experiencing housing insecurity bear challenges through no fault of their own, yet these hardships too often create barriers that negatively affect their educational journey. Every student deserves equitable access to excellence in learning, and it is imperative that we provide them with every opportunity to thrive despite adversity. These grants help close critical gaps for students who need additional support due to their living circumstances, safeguarding their right to a free and appropriate public education in New York State.”

State education officials announced a total of $8.1 million in grants statewide to support programs serving homeless students.

The announcement did not specify how the funding will be divided among the districts participating in the Westchester BOCES consortium.

  1. New Rochelles complete disreguard for the safty and well-being of its children. I recently filed a federal Case # 26-cv-00102 after seeing a facebook post by the mayor bringing children to dig in the PCB and dioxin laced mud from the Echo Bay Pratts landing site. As lead agency responsiable for remediating the toxins there New Rochelle has proven once again its disregard for the well-beig of its citizens to push its 40 year urban renewal plan forward.
