On Thursday, April 3rd, 2008 the first graders were directed to play in the field adjacent to the Trinity playground. The field contained a considerable amount of "goose poop". We did not think that is a good idea to have the children play during their lunch recess in a field littered with fecal material left by geese. We communicated this to the school. It was not healthy and frankly very disgusting. There was also some dog feces as well, marked by an orange cone (as directed by the Assistant Principal).
We can’t imagine any parent wanting their child playing in an area full of any kind of feces. If you are familiar with the Trinity layout, there is a blacktop. Maybe the blacktop is less forgiving than the field in terms of falls and scratches. One thing is obvious, the blacktop was certainly cleaner than a field littered with fecal material. Once again, we ask the similar questions:
Would this have happened in a North End school?
We would like to know:
- Has something similar happened to a child or children you know?
- How widespread is this poor judgment?
- Where is the common sense?
- Why isn’t there better communication with parents?
- What would be the Health and Wellness Committee’s opinion on this?
- Are certain liberties taken due the composition of the children that attend the schools?
- Is this just a case of benign neglect?
- How many times do events like this need to happen before we consider them a pattern?
- Is this the problem or just a symptom (condition) of the problem with our schools?
These questions haunt us as parents. Some of these questions are easily answered. Some are not. Health and safety are as basic as food and shelter. We want schools where we don’t have to worry about this type of event.
There are three basic rules every person involved with the schools should abide and live by:
- Treat children as if they were your own.
- Treat parents in the same manner you would like to be treated as a parent.
- Treat your colleagues in the same respectful and dignified manner that you would like to be treated as well.
My child goes to Trinity
My child goes to Trinity school and on a daily basis I’ve seen garbage, pieces of clothing, and even beer cans/bottles right by the field as parents drop their children to school in the morning. I even saw beer cans right by the kindergarten door. This is not what I want my child and the other school children to see on a daily basis when they go to school. This is a concern that has been raised to both the school and the district, but nothing was done about it. I really hope that the right individuals are paying close attention, taking note and placing our concerns on their agendas.
I live right around the
I live right around the block from Trinity. I have counted over 70 men playing soccer on that field on at least one occassion. There is always a considerable amount of soccer playing on that field. That is why my child who attends Trinity doesn’t play in grass but plays in dirt.
Th school superintendant has been noified of the large groups of people playing soccer and the effect it has on the field, so has the City Council.
Do you know what they did about it????
NOTHING
Which is obviously a
Which is obviously a maintenance or custodial or even a parks and recreation problem, but not a north and south issue. No I did not miss the point, because I played on that field as a child and as an adult(softball) with no problems. Also, there are men playing soccer on that field every night without complaint. if the feces is that of dogs, well I find it hard to believe that north enders are walking their dogs there, people of that neighborhood should be more respectful and obey the dog laws. Last, again, a error in poor judgement, if it is truly the case, should be brought to the principal and even the schools’ PTA( a powerful asset if all parents are involved ) to address the problem and not make it a problem that divides the system.

You missed the point. If there is feces on the field, clean the field or keep the children off the field. It is a matter of poor judgment.
