Another Car Crash for Jim Stowe to Ponder

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

Holding true to the regularly scheduled traffic accidents at the intersection of Pratt St and Adams St, two cars collided today as someone rolled through the stop sign. For years this community has been trying to work with the city to alleviate this issue. Even to the point of trying to raise money so WE would pay for speed humps to slow down traffic . Following all the steps we were asked to follow lead us nowhere . Trying to contact Jim Stowe on no less than 5 occassions to again open a dialogue after an SUV totalled 3 cars and rolled onto it’s roof in a one block stretch had no response from our councilman. None of the e-mails were returned as undeliverable and none were given the courtesy of a response. How bad does it have to get ? Do you need to see a death before you respond Mr Stowe ? Will that be important enough for your time ? It may not be a big deal to you so why don’t you explain it to the kids who have to dive for cover when the drivers speed down Pratt as a shortcut to Main St.

  1. Stop Signs
It is easier to get a plaque for your home recognizing it as a historical building than getting a stop sign placed anywhere in this city.

  2. Traffic Problems
I have found that municipal traffic engineers lack creativity and empathy when it comes to accident clusters. It is hard to quantify hearing accidents from your kitchen and having all the neighborhood to run out and see what happened this time. This is not unique to NR. In Yonkers on Central Avenue at a particular intersection there have been several fatalities with citizens complaining each time and on Rt. 9 in Greenburgh accident after accident with little tangible changes.

I suggest that you send a letter to the police department asking for copies of accident reports at the intersection for the past 5 years. They will have to send them to you and it will take time to compile, but is will provide info to you and your neighbors. At least you can try to improve the situation yourself, instead of helplessly complaining to deaf ears.

I doubt it is a speeding problem. The city may put a speed strip to check it or let you borrow a speed gun from the PD so you can see for yourself.

More productive would possibly be to check the sight lines of the intersection, shrubbery, fences, etc. Also, keep a log of each accident that you witness.

City municipalities are lax to address these issues due to liability concerns. They are more likely to apply for grants to replace traffic lights. Speed bumps are a problem with plowing.

How about a video camera on the intersection for a few months to see how the accidents occur?

Another place where I have seen numerous, numerous accidents is the corner of Palmer Avenue and River Street. Maybe more pronounced striping is needed there, back further. Give it a look.

Also, it is so easy to spot people on their cell phones and texting while driving. So easy to spot, especially on Pinebrook Boulevard and throughout town.

  3. Has anyone looked into if
Has anyone looked into if and how many accidents happened in the whole area?

    1. 8 accidents since 2000
Since 2000 , I have seen 8 accidents on the corner of Pratt And Adams . I didn’t actually see the impact , but I heard the crash and was outside to see who was hurt and watch them exchange information . Not all accidents require police reports, since some prefer not to involve the insurance co’s . Overall , the magnitude of these fender benders is increasing. People have been taken away in ambulances , however no pedestrians have been hit as far as I know . Mind you the ones I’ve seen are ones that happened only while I was at home. There may have been more.

  4. Traffic Advisory Committee
You can ask your councilman to put the topic up to the NR Traffic Advisory Committee for review …

    1. We’ve asked that question
When you have your councilman in front of the neighborhood association and many people are asking about what can be done to lessen the threat from speeding and accidents , wouldn’t the councilman try to help us through the traffic advisory committee process ? How about “I’ll try to do something for my constituants” ? Remember the requests from Mr Stowe come after much talk with the police , the head of streets and highways . At what point does a councilmember try to help a neighborhood ? Isn’t that what they are supposed to do ?

  5. Pratt Street area
It would be intersting to know, if and how many people have been hit by cars in that area.

  6. nobody cares about this area
As a resident of the area I can tell you that the Pratt St “bypass” is a nightmare . More and more kids live there and the traffic goes faster and faster . Drunks , taxicabs , delvery trucks ( Fed Ex , UPS , local deliveries) all seem to lack the ability to heed a stop sign when crossing a street known to have speeding traffic .
The EastEne Civic Assoc has had Jeff Coleman , the NRPD traffic div , Mr Stowe (who , when questioned , admitted to have had a stop sign put in his own neighborhood for HIS neighbors) ,sector police , even the mayor. Speeding cars , accidents , constant horn blowing to clear the way for the intruders , all quality of life issues , fall on deaf ears . We were constantly told why nothing could be done . Things like “you don’t use stop signs to control traffic ” or ” tell us when the speeders come around , and we’ll send a car” or ” you can’t use speed bumps on public streets” or “try the traffic calming program” (which is now defunct due to fiscal restraints). More people will be taken away in ambulances before this is addressed . That’s the sad part. Mr Stowe will be safe though because he’s never in this part of town.

    1. Pratt Street Speedway
Maybe an officer shld park at the corner of Adams at night and he can catch the cars that are speeding down the street. I think they are racing cars down Stephenson at the same time. A stop sign at Adams/Pratt will stop this problem.

  7. stop signs in that neighborhood
I have been at meetings (including city council meetings) when full stop signs for that neighborhood were rquested. Something needs to be done and fast.
