Negrin: Why Doesn’t New Rochelle Utilize “Reverse 911” to Alert Residents to Holiday Changes in Garbage Pickup Schedule?

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

With July 4th falling on a Saturday the City of New Rochelle shuttered city services on Friday July 3 and that meant an alteration to the garbage collection schedule for the week.

North end garbage and recyclables were to be put out on Wednesday and no garbage collection in the north end on Thursday.

Of course Thursday morning everyone put there trash out for pick up. Hence I pose the question, with the ability to call all households that have signed up for the connect New Rochelle program would it not be useful, for the 5 times a year it happens, to send a robo call out to the residents of the city alerting them to the change in schedule?

For one, there is no extra charge for using this service since it is a flat fee service.

Two, if I did not print my garbage collection schedule off of the city web site I would still be waiting for it. This could serve as a reminder of collection times and also that there is a schedule on line.

Third, we are all creatures of habit and we drag the trash out on the specific day because that is what we do.

I also propose that the city web site offer referendums but until that happens here is as a good a place as any to see if this idea would garner support.

I know that they do not want the reverse 911 to be bothersome to the citizens, I can appreciate that, but I do think this would be helpful and not an annoyance. What do you think?

PS – If you are going to rip me up via anonymous comments all I ask is that they are clever. I could use a good laugh

  1. Don’t use reverse 911 for garbage collection schedule
Keep it for important things. You said that you printed out the calendar. Didn’t you look at it? You really only have to look at in on holiday weeks.

    1. What DO they use Reverse 911 for?
I know what they CAN use for it but I do not recall ever getting a Reverse 911 call from the City. So, what calls have actually been made using the service?

  2. Garbage Collection in South End
Of course the south end counts. Well, at least to me. Sometimes you have to write from experience so I used a north end perspective.

    1. How about use of tech by City tonight?
You have one subject to discuss already — reverse 911.

How about adding what can be done with the City web site?

And how about what I wrote about the use of crime mapping software which is very cheap relative to value delivered.

  3. The South end had the same
The South end had the same problem. Do we count too?

  4. Great Idea
Great idea. I was not inconvenienced but I noticed that a lot of my neighbors were.

  5. It’s been done
They have used it to notify about garbage collection being suspended ( I think it was because of snow) and the system can target specific neighborhoods . They probably won’t be using it again simply because it does make sense 🙂

    1. garbage
You are right about the use for the suspension of grabage collection during the winter.

  6. Seems reasonable to me.
I suppose the CIty might argue that they want to “save” the use of the system for “emergencies” but at the very least we might want to look at how other municipalities employ their Community Notification System or “Reverse 911”.
