Reaction to LoHud Story on New Rochelle’s Changes to Downtown Parking

Written By: Talk of the Sound News

Reader reaction to New Rochelle to require 24-hour payment for downtown parking lots is running heavily against the change.

Six comments and not one of them positive. I hope the city takes notice. For years we have complained about the lack of parking AND the lack of quality businesses in the downtown area. Instead, we got Capelli and Avalon. Two places that only the rich can afford. How about addressing our concerns? Why is it so difficult for our city to have a Mall again? It is the only major city in Westchester that lacks any decent shopping. After 25 years of complaining about this, you would think that something would have changed for the better.

Take your business elsewhere. Instead of anger, just sit back and watch a bunch of clueless people run the city to the ground. There is actually some amusement in it. Just sad that hard working people have to pay for it. Funny how liberals only see more intrusion, taxes, and more fees as the answer to everything. And yes, they are liberals. I would encourage business owners to close up show and find a friendlier place to open. Interesting that Ayn Rand wrote about this kind of stuff over 50 years ago, and people can’t see it now. I guess our public schools are designed for that purpose.

New Rochelle is ridiculous. If I want to go to dinner I’m not going to pay for dinner and parking also. Most of the stores on Main street close at 6-7pm so the only ones who will be paying the meters will be people who go to the restaurants. Parking has never been a big problem in that area but it is now. I hope you figure out something else to put there when the restaurants go out of business. I will not be wasting my time or money in that New Ro anymore!

NR will look like Mt Vernon in another 20 years.

The North End rarely goes downtown who needs to be harrased by the City and be ticketed to death only to have to work with Jimmy G in the courts.
Too bad there are a few decent places to eat downtown but they are not so great that going elsewhere in the county won’t solve.
The morons on the City Council a going to bury the City one business at a time while give out the tax breaks to Lou Cappelli.
Nice Job Noam.

Wow, I am a former New Rochelle resident, lived there from birth until 6 years ago.

When I go to NR now, I see the ways in which the city is just nicle and diming its citizens and the visitors.

1) Apparently, they’ve started booting cars. Nice, keep the working people down.
2) I just noticed, 4 red light cameras at the intersection of Lincoln and North. A nice sweet way to collect passive income from people. I wonder how many more there are.
3) Meter maids gone wild.

Also, as far as the alternate side parking goes, I suppose it’s supposed to be for “street cleaning” I lived in NR 20 years in the same house, and had to dilligently move my car on alternate side days. The number of times I saw a street cleaner coem down the street? Under 10. The number of tickets I received? about 60.

What a joke NR has become.

I have lived in NR for 35 yrs and believe me this doesnt surprise me one bit. Take a look at the downtown, in the dark is better because its pretty scary in the daylight. Not much going on and what this will do is hurt the few decent restaurants. This is the suburbs so really who wants to go out to dinner and have to feed a meter? Answer: No one I know. The BID has done a spectacular job with the downtown, really great. Fruit markets, dollar stores just the kind of top notch retail we all want here, not to mention the fiasco down the block, New Roc (wreck) the worlds largest empty building.
My time here is almost done but I remember this town when the stores on Main Street were mobbed on Saturday, we had 3 movie theaters that did well and it was a nice place. For sure the economy is tough but, development here has been a joke. Cappelli fleeced us and he is still looking for more. This parking thing is really just another nail in an already dead downtown.

  1. Communication from the Mayor/24 hour parking
Wow! I have been a New Rochelle Resident for 41 years. I am very disappointed in Our Mayor Bramson. Whom by the way I went to school with. That’s right. Although I was not in the top ten percent of the class as he was (I was one of the Bridge Sitters) and if you went to NRHS you know what that means. However, Mayor Bramson back then took time to let “EVERYONE” know what was going on because he wanted All to be informed. As a Bridge Sitter most of did not care about the politics of the school but we knew anyway if we wanted to or not! I attended the city council on May 11, 2010 and was very very disappointed. First, I didn’t hear about the meeting for the 24/7 parking meter until after it was over. If it was not for my super attending that meeting I would have not heard about it at all. Mayor Bramson said that he posted the meeting in the newspaper. However, that is a luxury that the most working class in New Rochelle (the people that your are making their lives miserable with this 24 hour parking)don’t spend their little money on. They use their quarters for the parking meters! Some of them don’t even have a computer and the other half don’t even know how to find this information or would even know to look for such information because they have no idea what is going on! You say well we did what we need to do by Law… well that is a cop out and terrible that you would do this with out a FAIR reaction from ALL that live in the “DOWNTOWN AREA”. I live here and it is terrible. Most of my friends have moved down south as a result of New Rochelle becoming a Ghost Town with ridiculous things like 24 hour parking & New Roc city that the kids can’t afford!
At the meeting last night I was appalled that you would excused the Rich of New Rochelle after they spoke about the LITTLE YEARS that they have lived here and they are so excited ….Well we had to listen to their crap. Their are so happy to be in New Rochelle however they don’t eat here, shop here etc. However you continue to cater to them.. We THE PEOPLE OF NEW ROCHELLE SAY “Go back to Ohio! They do not care about what we are going through because they have driveways!
If we can barely pay for the quarter’s that we use for the meter, you think we can afford $500.00 parking permits! Shame on you! We True New Rochelleans have grown up here, ate here, worked here, lived here and this is how you treat us! Our money keeps New Rochelle running. It is marked a city however it is really a town. If you like the look of NYC then move there! The buildings look so stupid in the middle of everything! The people that live in them do not support New Rochelle because there is nothing here to do! So they go else where and come back to lay their heads and start the new day spending their money else where! So in closing I agree with the Reverend “You are messin’ with God’s people” You will regret it! You say you want to here from the PEOPLE however how many know about these council meetings? I knew because MY Super left a flier on my windshield…. which by the way I think you owe him for advertisement fees!

  2. People are upset because
People are upset because they see this as it is, just another tax on its citizens and another reason to stay away from downtown New Rochelle.

Can the present administration be any more out of touch with its citizenry?
