Peter Parente of United Veterans of New Rochelle served as Master of Ceremonies for a ceremony at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery to remember our veteran this Memorial Day Weekend. The decorating of the headstones is done the Sunday before Memorial Day each year in New Rochelle.

The Firing Detail of American Legion Post 8 fired a salute. American Legion Post 8 Commander Tom O’Keefe served as one of the flag bearers. Cub Scout Den 1, Packs 1, 3 and 6 from Holy Name Church also displayed the colors. New York State Senator George Latimer led the group in a rendition of the National Anthem. Chaplain Robert Pierce gave the invocation. Also on hand was Susan Kettner, Chairperson of the New Rochelle Zoning Board of Appeals and a candidate for City Judge. Other veterans on hand include William Moye, Henry Bast, Manfred Wuttke, James Murphy III, James Lasser, Eugene Longhi, Steve Savino, Thomas Roberts, William Roberts.

  1. New Rochelle remembers Veterans at Cemetery
This is really a moving ceremony. Very low key – we each go grave to grave to place flags on those marking veterans; exactly what the original Decoration Day was all about. Kudos to Pete Parente and the United Veterans for keeping this event alive. Hope next year there’ll be more people to participate at Holy Sepulchre and Beechwood Cemeteries.
