(New Rochelle, NY. September 21, 2010) — New Rochelle Democrats have elected Jared R. Rice, an attorney and community leader, to be their nominee in the November 2nd election for City Council in District Three. Rice, who received overwhelming support from the New Rochelle Democratic City Committee, pledged to be a responsive, accessible and effective advocate for his constituents.

Earlier this month, the New Rochelle City Council appointed Roxie Stowe to represent the Third District on an interim basis until the end of 2010. If elected, Rice would succeed Mrs. Stowe on January 1st, 2011 and serve the final year of the late Council Member’s term.

Rice expressed his admiration for the Stowe family: “Jim and Roxie Stowe have set an inspiring example of strong and dedicated service. I was privileged to work with and learn from Councilman Stowe before his untimely passing, and I thank Councilwoman Stowe for accepting the responsibilities of leadership at such a challenging moment in her life. I will work my hardest to honor their legacy.”

Acknowledging the unique history of this district, Rice said “I understand District Three was created as an opportunity district. Given the fact that in 2011 the city will be redistricting, I believe that the unique composition of District Three must be maintained.”

Rice has deep roots in the New Rochelle community and is a product of the New Rochelle public schools. As an attorney in private practice with his father and brother, Rice defends the rights of District Three residents and others on a daily basis. In particular, his experience as a criminal defense attorney would bring valuable insight to the council as the city strives to make its streets safer. Additionally, Rice has been active as a volunteer, with leadership roles in organizations such as New Rochelle First Lego League and the Westchester Young Democrats. He and his wife, Jasmine, a leasing consultant, have a daughter Jocelyn, age 16 months.

Rice noted that his priorities on the City Council would include public safety, youth services, and job creation. “Especially in these tough economic times, we need to do everything possible to support families, nurture our youth, and expand opportunities for employment,” said Rice.

Rice also noted that each neighborhood within the Third District has unique needs. “From flood mitigation in Halcyon Park, to renewal of the North Avenue and Lincoln Avenue corridors, to Historic District zoning standards, to careful oversight of college development,– each of these neighborhood priorities has to be addressed effectively and knowledgeably by the next Council Member,” said Rice.

Rice continued, “while New Rochelle, like all cities, faces big challenges today, it is imperative that we ensure that jobs are not lost and that the city acts fiscally responsible. If elected, I look forward to working with all of the council members to enact a balanced budget that allows existing homeowners to remain, promotes new revenue sources, and encourages new homeowners to pursue the American dream in New Rochelle.”
