The New Rochelle League of Women Voters debate night for New Rochelle candidates in the upcoming November 2 election is tonight at City Hall, starting at 7:30 PM, in the City Council chamber of City Hall (1st floor).
The following candidates will debate each other:
New Rochelle City Council/District 3: Jared Rice v. Peter Parente
State Assembly District 88: Assemblywoman Amy Paulin v. Rene Atayan
State Assembly District 91: Assemblyman George Latimer v. Bill Reed
State Senate District 37: Sen. Suzi Oppenheimer v. Bob Cohen
State Senate District 34: Sen. Jeff Klein v. Frank Vernuccio Jr.
New Rochelle City Judge: Susan Kettner v. Cynthia Lobo ?
NOTE: Apparently the LWV did not invite the judicial candidates to appear but both are, apparently, intending to show up so it remains unclear what will happen except that both judicial candidates will be in the room. It is hard to imagine why the only two people running for citywide office in New Rochelle would be prevented from appearing at the LWV Debate but we will just have to wait and see.
Will post video once NRTV broadcasts
Full disclosure, I missed the debate. There are certain things that come before covering a political debate and the Yankees in Game 5 of the ALCS is one of them.
I did get there when it was ending and heard the debate was OK but the format was limiting — just a few minutes, time for a couple of questions and not much more. It was a bit of a bust in that the most anticipated debate — Cohen v. Oppenheimer failed to materialize when Bob Cohen failed to appear. The report was a family emergency. They did not allow Lobo and Kettner to speak at all which strikes me as wrong and something that should be corrected in the future. They do not have to debate but they should be allowed to make 2-5 minute statements.
For those who were there, perhaps you can add some comments as to what you saw and heard.
I will post the video once NRTV makes it available.
Yankee Game and the LWV Debate format
As one of only 16,000 true Met fans in the country all I can say is that is unacceptable.
Now to the real point. There is NOTHING more limiting than a LWV debate. (caps were meant!) Candidates stack the question podium with supporters, long winded people with no questions and LVW moderators who just want to show they will not be pushed around.
The debates for city office at least need to be pushed into the neighborhoods. Open up Columbus School, Webster or Davis and have them there. People will come. Have district council debates in the district they will represent.

When are they going to make it available?
After the election, I’m sure!
The debates still aren’t on
The debates still aren’t on the schedule I just checked out on the NRTV link I found which BTW brought me back the city’s website so I guess the city runs this station.
So if the city runs the station and the Democrats didn’t look so good in the debates, do you really think Bramson will allow them to be aired? I’m starting to think not.
Bob, you should have taped them and Tivo-ed the game. In 50-50 hindsight, the Yanks lost ALCS anyway so you could have missed game 5. I probably would’ve chosen the game too.
disclosure
Full disclosure would be you informing the people how much money political candidates have given you to work for them, or on their behalf..That’s full disclosure… SEE NYS Board of Elections homepage and search to see !
I have disclosed
The candidates report and I have a disclosure block on the home page (right) and I disclosed on air at WVOX.
Do you really think this is how you help elect Democrats? Sad.

That Lobo is salt of the earth. Her and Jimmy. Fine specimens of New Rochelle.
Vote early and often.

NR Talk of The Sound: Coming of Age
Bob,
I will not be able to attend tonight’s debate but I was curious to know if you will be filming any of them and posting on NRTALK.
One of the most important moments/postings on this website is the replay of the NAACP Debates for District 3 and City Judge. You have brought what was once the hidden secret (neighborhood & community association debates) to the masses. Now we all get to hear what was said and no can say one thing at one place and another thing somewhere else without it being on record.
No longer does one have to wait for the LWV debate to be replayed on Ch75. I respect the LWV and the forum they put on but for a city council race the format is too stilted. Candidates, because the debate is replayed on TV, stack the deck in terms of putting in plants/fervent supporters to ask questions that the one running for office is too timid to bring up to the opponent, or you get the one person who states the preamble to the Constitution or asks a question that is not relevant to the debate at hand.
In the smaller neighborhood debates such as the NAACP, to name the most recent, real people with real questions stood at the microphone and asked questions about their neighborhood. The event being covered by this web site is a service that has not been provided to the people of New Rochelle before.
I do wish Talk of the Sound was around in 2007 when I was running. Although I might disagree with some opinions and agree with others on this site I do think that New Rochelle Talk of the Sound by being out there on the street has proven itself as a valuable information source. Especially in this case and for this I thank you.

Thanks, NRTV Will Shoot Video
Bruce,
I can put the debates from tonight on the web site whether I tape the debates or NRTV does the taping. The advantage for NRTV is that they have the speakers mic’d correctly and they have a better camera angle. There is also the “small” matter of my having to edit the video which is always the most time consuming task whoever does the tape recording.
What I will likely do is Tivo the debates, transfer the video to my computer, edit the video and upload it to YouTube in 15 minute increments (the limit on YT).
As for your point about making sure people do not say one thing to one group and another to another group, I would hope my efforts would encourage other amateur videographers to shoot video and upload it to YouTube and then let me know so I can link their video from Talk of the Sound. It is sort of the whole point of citizen journalism where “We” are the media.
