Parent Enters Columbus School, Assaults Teacher in Classroom, Terrifying Students

Written By: Robert Cox

Columbus School.JPGIn another “isolated incident” in the New Rochelle public schools, there was an altercation in a classroom at Columbus Elementary School between a teacher and a parent who bypassed security to enter the building. The parent entered the school and made their way to their child’s classroom. The teacher informed the parent that she was not supposed to be in the classroom without permission and directed her to leave. A heated argument ensued which became physical when the parent began to push the teacher. All of this took place in front of students in the class, some of whom were hysterical and screaming, sources tell Talk of the Sound.

As was the case with the recent intruder incident at Barnard School Bruce Daniele did not come to the school to investigate. Questions have been raised internally as to which security officer was assigned to guard the front door that day and how the parent was able to evade security. The security guard normally assigned to the school is named “Elsa”.

Should Dr. Yigal Joseph Remain as Principal of New Rochelle’s Columbus School?

Among those involved with Micros Only was Dr. Joseph who, according to the Journal News “testified that he held himself out as the president of the computer company at the center of the Mount Vernon federal corruption trial.”

  1. This Should Be Front Page News…
Two incidents within a few days of each other? This goes to show you how much the New Rochelle Board of Education cares for its students and faculty’s safety that calling the police department is a last result. We see here that an assault on a teacher still doesn’t warrant police presence. Hmm? I guess the jerk offs on the Board of Ed., the over payed idiots we have in the form of superintendents, city manager, mayor and council members feel that an assault is nothing and that both cases were isolated incidents. It seems as if an horrific heinous act must occur for police to get involved. God forbid the failing, criminally infested New Rochelle School district gets a bad write up by the state. City Hall and the Board of Education better pony up. Our children, teachers, husbands and wives lives are hanging by a thread because of these idiots in charge. If something else should happen within any of our schools in which an outsider was able to enter school premisses without authorization, the City and Board of Education will BOTH be held liable for any and all outcome. So BOTH better WAKE UP and do something immediately rather then sit on their fat, lazy, no good, asses and get to work protecting our children and faculty.

  2. This is VERY disturbing
    south side man,
Policeing a large school like that ,schould be done by professionals, not a retiree ( man or women ).
We are talking about our childrens SAFETY!!!!!!!!!!

    1. yep, raise the school tax to
yep, raise the school tax to hire professionals, We are talking about our children SAFETY!

we all want it, we just have to pay for it!

      1. typical knee jerk reaction
Thoughtless, uninformed commentary does not serve much purpose but feel free to make a fool of yourself.

The school district already spend well over $200 million a year, over the past 4 years they have spent close to $1 billion. The notion that the problem with security and safety in the public schools is due to a lack of funds is ludicrous.

There are more security guards on duty at the high school on a given weekday then there are officers on patrol in the entire city of New Rochelle. The district has spend millions on technology including surveillance equipment.

No amount of money is going to make up for the fact that security guards walk away from their post (as happened at Barnard, allowing an intruder to wander around the school for 1-3 hours), as happened at NRHS when my son was assaulted several years ago. As happened at Columbus when an intruder/parent attacked a teacher.

The issue is management which has permitted a lax culture when it comes to violence, bullying and campus security.

The other day I was at Albert Leonard Middle School. Walking through the hallways, I observed security guards on post at various intersections and doorways. Every single one of them was sitting down, reading a newspaper. You can see the same thing at NRHS and most other schools if not every school.

If the guards are sitting around reading the paper except between periods and the time between periods is 3 minutes and there are 9 periods that would mean these guards are actually working less than 30 minutes a day. Now, I recognize they have to be there and they do check hall passes but where else can you work a job where you can openly pull up a chair, sit down and read the newspaper or a novel when you are supposed to be monitoring the area around your post.

The sad fact is that the security guard positions are primarily patronage positions where SOME of the people are unqualified but got the job due to friends, family or political considerations. In some cases even worse occurs to give jobs people who are not qualified. We see this in the hiring of people who lied on their job applications and yet still work for the district. We see this in the phony Ralph Kohler resolutions last year, the screwing around with the municipal service test, the creating of an entirely new position for Kohler after he “failed” the test so he could keep getting his six-figure salary, the current attempts to save him again by creating yet another position and giving yet another test that only he will take.

I am not naive enough to think that is going to change but the administration needs to stop reporting phony VADIR numbers and demand more for its money. The union is certainly aware that security breakdowns like those that occurred recently at Barnard and Columbus present a threat not just to students but their own members.

Let’s start by acknowledging that sweeping these things under the run needs to stop, then we can look at how current resources are used. I seriously doubt that higher taxes is the answer but everything should be on the table when it comes to the security of our children and the teachers and staff responsible for them.

  3. Women should not be heading up security at the schools
I don’t mean to sound sexist. And by the same token I don’t believe a 120 lb man should be heading up security either. School security does not carry weapons, therefore it is imperative that anyone in that position be able to subdue another person. Another person that may be large, carrying a weapon, violent etc. If a small woman or man does get the job they should be able to prove they have the skills to take down a large aggressive person. That is no job that should be given out to friends and family. Sorry about the headline, but it did get your attention.
