Journal News Explores Alternatives on Animal Sacrifice in New Rochelle

Written By: Robert Cox

Journal News: Severed animal parts in New Rochelle may be tied to religious rites Jorge Fitz-Gibbon has a comprehensive article on the topic of animal sacrifice in Westchester and nearby counties over the past few decades. This is a very good article, very thorough and well worth a read for those interested in the broader context for the recent discoveries of sheep and goats in New Rochelle parks.

Some experts caution that law enforcement officials may be too quick to label ritualistic incidents as Santeria because of the religion’s name recognition — the rock band Sublime even scored with a hit titled “Santeria.”

“I think many times what happens is people just jump to conclusions,” said Miguel De La Torre, a professor of social ethics at Iliff School of Theology in Denver and head of its Justice and Peace Institute. “They found some mangled animal, it has to be Santeria, which obviously is not always the case, especially when you’re talking about decapitated animals.

What becomes clear is that this is an issue that will become more prevalent not less as the demographics in New Rochelle continue to evolve.
