If I’m Dreaming, Don’t Wake Me
Posted on December 11, 2010 by Incoming Tide
…its 2:30am, I’m wide awake or maybe dreaming, solving the worlds problems, one after another…until about 5:00am. This abnormal process of late, isn’t a mid-life crisis or I’d run to the restroom every hour, its my journey as a Producer. Usually the worlds problems are just my ‘to do list’ for the next day, week or month – I’m not selfish, I tried lowering the unemployment rate.
So its been awhile since my last post, a bit unprofessional so says the social media experts. My answer to them is that I was under intense pressure, managing a restaurant, consulting with other restaurants and analyzing Murphy’s Law. Yes, Murphy’s Law should be top of mind when producing a project, especially as an independent producer, the list multiplies.
Hence, my last project Incoming Tide’s Performing Arts Festival. Whew…figuratively I’m still on the couch talking to my therapist. The multi-day festival is probably the trophy, a banner project ending my first full year as an indie producer. Despite newbie festival hiccups, the branded entertainment was well received by all. I made new friends, increased visibility, gaining kudos from the community and City officials.
The performances were fantastic, all aligned to “My Favorite Things” my business model mantra. To my delight, two classic performers Clarissa Sinceno and The Brian Carter Quartet actually performed the song. Go For Launch rocked the afternoon with tunes crossing ranges of genres – wow, because they’re all under 30y old. Making the festival a cultural project, we listened to the flavorful Don Coqui Salsa Band – and yes, I danced. Another smooth group, Nanny Assis and Arthur Lipner provided Brazilian jazz that flowed similar to the breeze coming off the Long Island Sound (our backyard).
The comedians are another story, no hiccups (maybe the kids shouldn’t have been present), but next time I’m wearing a roasting-proof vest. I became the punch line for a few as they politely roasted New Rochelle’s proximity to NYC. Comedian Dante Nero is still explaining to his Grandma, why he chose to perform in NR. Bethany Van Delft & Friends arrived in Paul Marino’s Chinook after a 90 minute traffic jam on the BQE. She mentioned never performing with a generator behind her stage, and then I recall the stage lights fading during her stand-up as our 2nd generator died. Laughter was shared by all.
So, will I produce the event again? You bet your last dollar – as I did for this show. There is nothing more thrilling than having my favorite things in my backyard. The breeze off the water, the smiles & cheers, the professionalism of all performers, makes this event worthwhile.
A big thanks to the City of New Rochelle for supporting this project, another big thanks to the performers, and a huge thanks and hug to all of you who joined me over the three days. We will see you next year!
