Iona MBB: Machado, Glover named CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-Americ

Iona College men’s basketball juniors Mike Glover (Bronx, NY) and Scott Machado (Queens, NY) added to their list of accolades for the 2010-11 campaign earning CollegeInsider.com Lou Henson All-American status on their resumes. Glover and Machado were two of 25 players named to the team.

The Gaels were one of two teams to have more than one player with Glover and Machado joining Butler’s Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack. The duo was also the lone representatives from the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the New York Metro Area.

Glover leads the Gaels and is No. 2 in the MAAC with 17.9 points per game and 10.1 rebounds per game average. He ranks in the Top 10 in the NCAA in field goal percentage (60.6%) and double-doubles (19). Glover posted a team-leading 29 games with 10 or more points and had 16 games with 20 or more in his first season in Maroon & Gold.

Machado ranks tied for second in the nation in assists per game averaging an Iona record 7.5 dimes per contest. He’s No. 2 on the team in scoring at 13.4 ppg and No. 3 in rebounding at 3.8 rpg. Machado has shattered Iona’s single-season record of 194 assists and enters this weekend’s game at East Tennessee State with 26 on the season.

Both performers were named to the All-MAAC First Team, MAAC All-Tournament team and NABC All-District teams. Glover was CollegeInsider.com’s MAAC Player of the Year.

Iona holds a 24-11 record on the season entering Saturday’s CollegeInsider.com Post Season Tournament semifinal matchup at East Tennessee State. The Gaels have set numerous single-season team records including games player, field goals, field goal attempts, three-pointers, three-point attempts, assists, points scored, least turnovers per game and best assist-to-turnover ratio. The squad is just three rebounds shy of the single-season program mark.

Rather selecting a first, second, third team and honorable mentions; the Lou Henson All-America squad is just one team. The 2011 Lou Henson Player of the Year will be announced at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet on April 1 in Houston, site of the men’s basketball championship.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top Mid-Major player in Division I college basketball. The award is named in honor of Lou Henson who retired after a spectacular coaching career that lasted 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four
